Fort George contains the longest record of civilization
in Duval County ranging from shell mounds that date back 7,000 years, through
plantation era structures, to a 1920's resort club. The history of Ft. George
Island is a cross section of Florida's history. Visitors can learn about Fort
George island and its former inhabitants by taking a 4.4-mile self-guided tour
on the park’s Saturiwa Trail, by car, bicycle, or on foot. Tour guide books are
available at the Little Talbot Island ranger station.
Whether you walk, bike, or drive on Fort George Island, you
will find yourself surrounded by lush vegetation. Hidden by this green mantle is
evidence of 6000 years of human occupation; ranging from shell mounds, through
plantation era structures, to a 1920's resort club. The history of Ft. George
Island is a cross section of Florida's history.
